The Order Of Israfel : « Cinq morceaux de l'album ont été enregistré à la première prise »

Quelques heures seulement avant le show de The Order Of Israfel au Desertfest Londonien (26-04-2015), Tom Sutton se tient devant le backstage de la mythique salle du Koko. Très à l'aise dans son jean pattes d'Eph', le guitariste et frontman se livre à mes questions armé d'un immense sourire suédois. Il faut dire que le Monsieur n'en est pas à sa première interview. Ex Church Of Misery, Tom Sutton gratte désormais la six cordes chez Horisont et plus récemment chez Night Viper. Il est le digne représentant de la fertile mafia musicale de Göteborg, en Suède, qui a vu naître bon nombre d'amateurs de musique lourde et lente. Des origines qui le guident tout au long de son parcours musical...

Pelecanus : J'ai entendu dire que vous partiez en tournée avec Pentagram, plutôt pas mal non ?

Tom Sutton : Oui c'est génial ! Quand il a été question de la tournée, Patrick, notre bassiste a proposé de les contacter. J'ai travaillé en tant que technicien guitare pour Pentagram, et le groupe de Patrick, Doomdogs, a déjà tourné avec eux, ils ont dû faire trois concerts ensemble. Donc ouais, je les connais déjà. J'ai aussi tourné avec Death Row, le groupe qu'ils avaient avant Pentagram, c'est Pentagram sans Bobby en fait. Victor (ndlr. Griffin) était au chant. Je n'ai pas trouvé ça si bizarre quand on me l'a annoncé ; je me suis dis "bon je pars en tournée avec Pentagram, ok". Mais  mantenant que j'y pense, et si je reviens 10 ou 15 ans en arrière, j'ose à peine l'imaginer. C'est incroyable !

Les deux groupes forment une belle affiche, rien que du doom !

C'est précisément pour ça que j'ai hâte ! J'espère qu'on va pouvoir créer une atmosphère un peu particulière. On ne sonne pas de la même manière, mais on a une même sensibilité. J'espère que les gens qui aiment le Classic Doom Metal vont apprécier !

The Order Of Israfel est ta principale activité ou bien tu as d'autres projets à côté ?

J'ai deux boulots et trois groupes ! Je ne dors pas beaucoup. Je suis dans Horisont, et j'ai un nouveau groupe qui s'appelle Night Viper. Night Viper se situe quelque part entre Judas Priest et quelque chose qui ressemblerait au Kill Them All de Metallica. Et oui, j'ai deux boulots à temps partiel aussi…

Le nom du groupe m'intrigue beaucoup, The Order Of Israfel, comment vous l'avez choisi ?

Alors, j'étais avec ma mère. On parlait avec un ami lorsqu'il a mentionné que Israfel c'était le nom donné à l'archange de la musique. Un ange de la musique ! C'est génial ! Qu'y a-t-il de plus important et de plus beau que la musique ? Voilà… J'ai juste adoré ce nom. J'ai trouvé que c'était un bon nom de groupe potentiel parce que je m'intéresse à beaucoup de choses en général, mais le plus important dans ma vie reste la musique. Ça parle de musique et on adore la musique, on a donc trouvé ce nom honnête et simple. A vrai dire il s'agit du nom musulman pour archange. On se doutait bien du danger d'un tel nom. Tout le monde nous sort « The Order Of Israel ». C'est pas Israel, c'est Israfel ! Enfin, qu'est-ce qu'on peut y faire ? C'est vraiment dur de trouver un nom, c'est piégeant… Et c'est toujours intéressant d'avoir un nom avec un véritable sens, qui signifie quelque chose pour nous et pas juste un truc cool. Même si c'est un nom cool !

Comment décrirais-tu le son de The Order Of Israfel ?

C'est très simple, pour moi c'est du Classic Doom Metal, mais tout le monde nous dit le contraire. Il semblerait que ma définition de doom metal soit différente des autres, enfin en ce moment du moins. Pour moi c'est Cathedral, Candlemass, Reverend Bizarre, The Gates Of Slumber, Pentagram, Trouble, c'est ça le Doom Metal pour moi. Même si on joue certains morceaux avec des passages à la guitare acoustique, ça reste du Doom Metal. Pour beaucoup de gens le Doom c'est Sleep, qui est pourtant bien spécifique. Notre son est aussi influencé par le Classic Heavy Metal et la Folk. J'écoute beaucoup de choses posées comme Rondellus. Ils ont fait un album de reprises de Black Sabbath avec des instruments médiévaux et ils chantent en latin. C'est paisible et beau. Ils ont fait pas mal de bandes originales de films... C'est très important pour moi de rester dynamique, ouvert. Je ne veux pas que tout soit joué avec la même nuance.

Est-ce que tu peux me parler un peu du dernier album de The Order Of Israfel : Wisdom. Comment vous avez travaillé dessus ? Avec qui ? Est-ce que vous l'avez enregistré dans un endroit particulier ?

Eh bien ce fut une super expérience ! Patrick et Hans, respectivement bassiste et batteur du groupe, c'est le genre de gars qui connaissent tout le monde, qui ont plein d'amis partout dans la musique à Göteborg. Soit ils connaissent directement les bonnes personnes, soit ils connaissent quelqu'un qui connaît quelqu'un…

Pratique !

Oui, c'est vraiment cool. Par exemple, je ne connaissais pas ce Jörgen Cremonese, le gars qui a produit l'album. Son nom est sorti de nulle part, c'était un mec qu'ils connaissaient. Il a dit oui tout de suite et après on a enregistré la batterie, tout ça dans la même journée. C'est incroyable, comme si un miracle était en train de se produire. Hans a fait sept titres, au final neuf officiellement, mais il les a enregistrés en un jour. Cinq morceaux de l'album ont été enregistrés dès la première prise. C'est complètement fou, c'est comme si on l'avait enregistré et qu'on était ensuite partis. On a enregistré les guitares et la voix chez Jörgen. Jörgen vit près de l'océan, la vue était magnifique par la fenêtre. Il a une jolie maison, paisible, c'était vraiment très agréable. On a adoré être là-bas. C'était très relaxant, il y avait une atmosphère idéale pour la musique qu'on fait. On joue du Heavy mais on essaie aussi de le rendre élégant et beau.

Vous avez très rapidement été signés chez Napalm Records, c'est vraiment génial d'avoir une telle opportunité aussi vite.

Une fois encore, je n'ai pas trouvé cela bizarre sur le moment, mais avec du recul je trouve que je suis assez chanceux ouais ! Je me souviens du temps où je jouais dans mon tout premier véritable groupe, on cherchait par tous les moyens comment saisir ce type d'opportunités justement, comment se faire signer, etc. Au final, je n'ai jamais eu à utiliser ce genre d'information ! Dès qu'on a eu notre premier morceau d'enregistré sur un iPhone, on l'a mis sur You Tube. Patrick notre bassiste, était très enthousiaste, on l'a envoyé aux labels, et Napalm Records nous a très vite répondu en disant qu'ils voulaient nous signer. On était super contents ! Ils avaient vraiment envie de bosser avec nous. Ils ont fait un super boulot d'ailleurs, c'était hyper facile de travailler avec eux. Ils sont très organisés. Donc ouais, tout s'est vraiment très bien passé.

J'ai cru remarquer que vous étiez plutot actifs sur les réseaux sociaux, c'est quelque chose d'indispensable pour un groupe aujourd'hui ?

Oui, on est actifs, mais on nous demande souvent de l'être encore plus. Quand on demande comment, on nous répond « il vous faut plus de likes sur Facebook », ou bien « vous devriez utiliser vos contacts, partager avec les autres groupes, poster des vidéos, aller checker les autres et ils le feront aussi pour vous en retour... » C'est comme jouer à un jeu, alors on s'y laisse prendre, on fait du mieux qu'on peut. Et puis c'est assez marrant de voir tous ces gens sur Instagram par exemple, ou bien tout simplement de suivre d'autres groupes.

Pour finir, vous allez voir quoi aujourd'hui au Desertfest ?

On est assez pris aujourd'hui, mais je pense que je vais aller voir Angel With. Je les ai déjà vus plein de fois mais je ne me lasse jamais d'Angel Witch !

Pelecanus : I have heard you are gonna be on tour with Pentagram, how exciting is it?

Tom Sutton : It is great ! When we have heard about the tour, Patrick our bass player, said « let's get in touch with them, you never know ». I have worked as a guitar tech' for Pentagram, and Patrick's own band Doomdogs toured with Pentagram, they did three shows maybe together. So yeah, I know them already. Also, I toured with Death Row, which is the band they had without Bobby Liebling, basically Pentagram without Bobby. Victor (ndrl. Griffin) was singing. I didn't feel that was weard actually. Well I am going to be on tour with Pentagram, yeah ok. But then, when I think about it, if I take myself back in 10 or 15 years ago, waw that is not going to happen ! It is amazing !

It is indeed two bands who make a really nice line-up, all doom !

Yes that is exactly why I am exited about. I hope we can create, at the shows, a real atmosphere. We don't sound the same but it is a similar feeling. For people who love that kind of Classic Doom Metal that is something for they will be very happy, I hope !

Is The Order Of Israfel your only activity or do you have any other projects ?

I have two jobs and three bands ! I don't sleep very much. I am in Horisont, and I have a new band called Night Viper. Night Viper is somewhere between Judas Priest and something like Kill Them All of Metallica. And yeah, I have two kind of jobs as well, part time.

I was wondering about the band's name, The Order of Israfel, how did you choose this name ?

I was with my mom actually. We were talking to a friend of us, and he mentioned that Israfel was the name for the angel of music. An angel of music, that is great ! What is more important and beautiful than music ? You know… I just loved that. I though it as a good potential band's name because I care about a lot of thing but easily to me the most important thing is music, in my life. It is about music and we love music, it is what we are interested in and what we care about, it was just very honnest and simple for us.

It is the islamic name for one of the archangels. We knew there was a danger with that name. Everybody comes to me saying « The Order Of Israel ». It is not Israel, it is Israfel ! But, what can we do ? It is hard to try to think about a name, because it is difficult, it is tricky... It is nice to have that meaning like I have said, it means something to us. It is not just a cool name, even if it is a cool name !

How would you describe your sound in a few words ?

To me it is very simply Classic Doom Metal, but everybody else tells us it is not. My definition of Doom Metal seems to be different from people, at that time at least. To me it is Cathedral, Candlemass, Reverend Bizarre, The Gates Of Slumber, Pentagram, Trouble, that is Doom Metal to me. Even if we play some songs with accoustic guitar stuffs, to me it is still Doom Metal . But actually for a lot of people Doom Metal  is Sleep, which is very specific. Our sound also contains a lot of Classic Heavy Metal and Folk influences. I use to listen to a lot of quiet stuffs like The Rondellus.  They have made an album with Black Sabbath songs with medieval instruments and singing in latin. It is very peacefull and beautiful. They have made a lot of songtracks as well. To me it is very important to be dynamic and colorfull. I don't want to do just one single tone record.

Can you say a little bit about your last album with The Order Of Israfel : Wisdom. How did you work on it ? With who ? Did you record it in a special place ?

Well, it was a really good experience actually. Patrick and Hans, the bass player and drummer in our band, they are the kind of guys who know everybody, who have a lot of friends everywhere in music in Götenborg. They know everyone or at least know someone who knows that person…

Handfull !

Yeah, very nice. I didn't know for example that name Jörgen Cremonese, the guy who produced the album. His name came up somehow, it was just some guy they knew. He said yes, and then we basically recorded the drums in one day. It was amazing, it was like watching a miracle happens. Hans did seven, well it is nine songs officially, but he did all the songs in one day. Five of the songs of the album were first taken actually. It is crazy, it is like we did it and just go, that's ok. We recorded the guitars and the vocals at Jörgen's house. Jörgen lives near to the ocean. It was beautiful to look at the window. It is a very cute house, peacefull, it was really sweet. We loved being there. It was very relaxing and it was really the right atmosphere for the music we make. We play Heavy music but we also try to make it elegant and beautiful at the same time.

You have been signed on Napalm Records very quickly, it is great for a band to have that kind of opportunity so early, isn't it ?

Again, I didn't feel it was weard at the moment but yeah, when I look at it I feel actually pretty lucky ! I remember a long time ago, when I had my first real band and when we were getting information about how to get signed and that kind of stuff you know… I never had to use that kind of information ! We didn't try that hard basically. When we had the first song of our first gig recorded on an iPhone, we put it on You Tube. Patrick our bass player, was very enthousiastic, we just sent it to labels, and Napalm Records answered us quickly saying they really wanted to sign us. We were super happy ! They really wanted to work with us. They have done a nice job, it was super easy to work with them. They are very organised. So it has been great.

I noticed you were quite active on the social medias, it is quite handfull for a band isn't it ? How important is it to you ?

Yeah, we are active, but actually we get the advise that we should be more active. When we ask how can we do this, the anwer is « you need more Facebook likes ». They suggest us all the time « you should use your contacts, share with other bands, post videos, check these guys out and they will do the same for you... » It is like playing a game in a way, so we try to do so as much as we can. It is funny to see people on Instagram for example, or to be able to follow other bands.

Are you going to see some bands here at Desertfest today ?

We are going to be pretty busy today, but I would like to see Angel Witch. I have seen them a lot of times for now, but I will always want to see Angel Witch !
